Course Overview

The Certificate II in Construction Pathways will prepare graduates with the skills and knowledge for entry into an apprenticeship (Certificate III trade qualification) in one of the various sectors of the construction industry. The outcome of the Certificate II in Construction Pathways does not meet the requirements for a qualified tradesperson.This course is designed specifically for those from a range of age groups and backgrounds who are interested in obtaining employment as an apprentice in construction. Successful course graduates would continue into the nationally endorsed Certificate III qualifications relevant to their chosen trade stream, such as carpentry, bricklaying, plastering, wall and floor tiling, painting and decorating, roof tiling, or other construction trades.

Course Structure

In order to achieve this qualification, students must complete 7 core units plus 5 elective units that support pathways into specific construction trades.
Core Units
  • CPCCOM1012 – Work effectively and sustainably in the construction industry
  • CPCCOM1013 – Plan and organise work
  • CPCCOM1014 – Conduct workplace communication
  • CPCCOM1015 – Carry out measurements and calculations
  • CPCCOM2001 – Read and interpret plans and specifications
  • CPCCWHS2001 – Apply WHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry
  • CPCCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry (White Card)
Elective Units
Elective units may include foundation skills from:
  • Carpentry
  • Bricklaying
  • Concreting
  • Painting and decorating
  • Wall and floor tiling
  • Plastering
  • Roof tiling
  • Other general construction fields (depending on provider)

Assessment Methods

Observation during on-the-job or role play/simulation
Questioning may include self-assessment, verbal answers, written questionnaires, activity modules or interviews.
Review of Products including work samples or products Portfolio may include documents, products with supporting documentation, historical evidence.
Third party Structured Activities may include Projects, Case studies, presentations, role play, demonstrations, and progressive tasks.
